I get a number of common questions when it comes to L&H. The first and foremost being, ‘Are they twins?’ and other twin related questions (which by the way I answer a bunch of them in my Twin FAQ post). But other common questions include, ‘What do you feed L&H?’, ‘What activities and toys do L&H like?’, and “What books do you guys read?’.
I’ve dabbled in the topic of baby/toddler food, as well as a few recommendations about toys – which I think I’ll continue or do more of in the future – but it struck me the other day when a friend asked me about books, that this was a HUGE question. Mostly because, like more parents of young children, we spend hours reading books. And notably, we spend hours reading the. same. book. over. and. over. again. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading to L&H AND I love how much they love books and being read to. But there are days when I’d rather the floor open up and swallow me whole than to read ‘Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See’ one more time. So I figured, let’s take some time to talk about books and what we like to read here in the hopes that it may inspire you to add a different book to your collection, and also may help prevent the throwing of any brown bear books in the future.
These are current favorites in our household. Like any good book collection, ours has grown steadily – and past favorites are always around. I’ve got roundups about our top books at different ages: 0-12 months, 12-18 months, and eventually there will be books for ages beyond as L&H grow! So stay tuned. But for now, at 18-24 months….these are our current well loved reads:
Busy Builders Busy Week by Jean Reidy
This board book is adorable, and reminds me of books from my childhood by Richard Scary. The pictures are bright and busy – i.e.: there’s lots to see, point out, and talk about. so it’s not boring to read this over and over. It’s helped L&H learn their animals, and start to get a grip on the names of construction vehicles. Available on Amazon for $7.
Spoiler alert: you’re going to see a LOT of books by Salina Yoon on all of our favorites lists. We love her board books – they have sweet stories with simple, yet entertaining story lines. Penguin and Pinecone is one I read to my nephew when he was much younger, and I made sure it was on our bookshelf before L&H arrived I loved it so. Believe me, it will warm your heart every time you read it. Available on Amazon for $6.
Bears Big Day by Salina Yoon
Told you. We are big fans of Salina Yoon! In Bears Big Day, the main character…Bear…. begins going to school and learns that it’s okay to take a piece of comfort from home with you. It’s a really cute read. Available on Amazon for $8.
Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle
Okay, I feel like everyone has read the original Blue Truck Book (if not, you should! It’s really cute)….but did you know there is a follow up?! And, I think I like this one even better than the first. Available on Amazon for $6.
Teeth Are Not for Biting by Elizabeth Verdick
It’s a tough topic, but L is a biter. Or at least she was a biter – and H was bearing the brunt of it. After weeks (and months) that felt like forever, a friend recommended we get this book — not only did it become L&H’s absolute favorite book, but it really helped us communicate with L that biting is not okay. It’s from the Best Behavior series which has tons of topics too like Hands Are Not For Hitting, Feet Are Not For Kicking, Diapers Are Not Forever, Pacifiers Are Not Forever, and more. There’s even one about not pulling tails for anyone with a dog or cat. Sometimes I wonder if maybe the author, Elizabeth Verdick, is Daniel Tiger’s mom?! Available on Amazon for $6.
The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss
This, along with all the other books in Dr Seuss’ Bright & Early Board Books Series, is a cute and playful read. L&H are big fans of brushing their teeth – basically they just eat the toothpaste…. – but still, this is a fun way to read to them and explain WHY we brush our teeth. Available on Amazon for $5.
Pete the Cat and the Lost Tooth by James Dean
This is weird, I don’t know why there are so many favorite books in our collection about teeth. It’s just a pattern I guess. Maybe L&H will be dentists someday?! Anyway, we got this book for free from a storytime at the library several months ago. It is a paper book (not a toddler friendly board book) so buyer beware, but I will say despite MANY readings, it has held up well to little hands. I look forward to adding more Pete the Cat books to our collection in the future. Available on Amazon for $4.
